VEEDERSBURG — David E. Abernathy, 79, a life resident of Wabash Township, died suddenly at 2:02 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002 in the emergency room of Provena USMC Logan Campus, Danville, Ill. He was born Jan. 29, 1923 in Wabash Township, the son of Lucky and Katherine Florence Keller Abernathy. He married Beverly Jean Maines Nov. 11, 1944 in Covington. She preceded in death Nov. 23, 2001. He was employed at Harrison Steel in Attica for a few years and then 39 years at G. M. Central Foundry in Tilton, Ill., retiring in 1986. He was a member of UAW Local 579. Survivors include: two sons, Gary (Pam) Abernathy, Kingman and James (Connie) Abernathy, Veedersburg; a daughter, Ramona (Rick) Strawser, Danville, Ill.; three sisters, Irene Wittenmyer and Helen Furr, both of Rockville and Sylvia (Joe) Coffing, Kingman; five grandchildren, Angie Cottrell, Rockville, Lori Abernathy, Bloomingdale, Melissa Guthrie, Westfield, Melanie Reissmann, Kingman and Brandi Moss, West Lebanon; a step grandchild, Deaton Cox; and nine great-grandchildren, Amanda Shoaf, Ryan Strawser, Jordan Shoaf, Rodney Guthrie, Megan Reissmann, Drew Guthrie, Devin Reissman, Wesley Cottrell and Lexi Kelley. He was also preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and a grandson, Rodney Strawser. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Pastor Paul Kent officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. – jlr
